Appearance matters: Make your content professional
After a horrific month of construction in our house, resulting from a collapsed pipe (and then realizing we needed to replace all of our piping), I've recently received more invoices in one week than I would ever want in a lifetime. I'm not happy about having to pay them, obviously, but what's been an added irritation is the way they look.
I know, does it really matter? The answer is yes, it does, and here's why. As a business, everything you do is a reflection on how you operate. So, when you deliver an invoice with spelling errors, it tells me you don't pay attention to details. And, if you didn't pay attention to even the smallest detail when you were re-piping my house, then we have a problem. It makes me second guess all the work you've done.
Another invoice that came my way was missing really obvious punctuation marks. It was part of an automated email that goes out when the bill is sent. Once again, I'm left feeling like this company didn't double check their work. If they forget to add a period to the end of a sentence, what did they forget to do when they were working in my house? Did they double check their work?
What you put on paper, in video, on social media and anywhere else you have content, counts. It tells a story about your business. It's up to you to decide what that story says.
Your content is critical to the success of your business. Make sure it is authentic, connects with your customers and is grammatically correct. People notice when things don't look right and they talk. Rarely do you hear conversations around all the things that went really well when working with a company. We always seem to hear about the bad. Do your best to limit the bad (everywhere, of course), but especially in the content you put out the world.
I can't wait to get that next invoice in a few days. Who knows what that one will look like. If it's professionally done without spelling and punctuation errors, I'll be a (somewhat) happy camper.
